Smartphones aren’t going anywhere; we need them to manage our modern lifestyles. However, it’s still possible to give yourself an analog break now and then.
When you step away from the screens, you give your mind a much-needed digital break. Taking some time to unplug promotes mindfulness, improves sleep, gives you a chance to connect with others, and increases productivity.
So let’s say you want to go an hour without your phone, how would you spend the time? (No TV, either.) Put your device on airplane mode and give one of these ideas a try:
1. Get in a workout.
Head to the gym or your favorite fitness studio for thirty to sixty minutes. Not only will you get in a great workout, but you’ll also connect with others doing the same.
2. Read that book you’ve been meaning to finish.
The book that’s been sitting on your nightstand or coffee table for the past several weeks – now could be a great time to finish it. Make a cup of tea and get lost in the pages for an hour.
3. Journal or write.
Pour out your thoughts on the page. Stare off into space and write whatever comes to your mind.
4. Take your dog for a walk.
Take your fluffy friend for a walk. But leave your phone at home (or in your pocket on airplane mode or with Do Not Disturb turned on).
5. Meet up for coffee with a friend.
Make a coffee date with a friend you haven’t seen in a while.
6. Listen to music (and dance).
Pull up your favorite playlist (without checking your notifications) and dance it out. Or sit back and relax.
7. Draw or sketch.
Pull out your sketch pad or use a piece of scrap paper.
8. Organize something.
Go through a closet, your purse, your bathroom cabinet, or whatever area you’ve been meaning to go through and organize.
